Warning: Thieves have stolen paper checks from mailboxes in Tredegar and washing them in chemicals (nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol) to change the amounts and payees.

This is a growing scam, and it's important to be aware of it so you can protect yourself. Here are some tips to help you avoid becoming a victim:

  • Be extra careful mailing checks from your mailbox. To be extra cautious, take them to a post office or use online bill pay.

  • Use indelible ink (ink gel pens) when writing checks. This type of ink is much less likely to be washed off with chemicals like nail polish remover.

  • Shred any checks you no longer need. This will make it more difficult for thieves to steal them.

  • Check your bank account statements regularly for any unauthorized transactions. If you see anything suspicious, report it to your bank immediately.

If you think your checks have been stolen, you should contact your bank immediately. They can cancel your checks and help you protect your account.

You can also report check fraud to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC can help you file a complaint and get your money back.

Here are some additional tips to help you protect yourself from check fraud:

  • Be careful about who you give your checks to. Only give your checks to people you trust.

  • Never write a blank check. Always fill in the amount before you sign the check.

  • Keep your checks in a safe place. Thieves are more likely to steal checks that are easily accessible.

  • Be aware of the signs of check fraud. If you see any of the following, it could be a sign that your check has been fraudulently used:

    • Unauthorized transactions on your bank account statement

    • Checks that have been altered

    • Checks that have been cashed for more than the amount written on them

    • Checks that have been cashed by someone other than the payee

If you think your check has been fraudulently used, you should contact your bank immediately. They can help you cancel your check and protect your account. You should also file a police report and report the fraud to the FTC.
